On April 1, International Standard ISO 787-5:2026 \"General test methods for pigments and extenders – Part 5: Determination of oil absorption,\" the 8th international standard drafted under the leadership of CNOOC Changzhou Research Institute of Coatings and Chemicals Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as \"CNOOC Changzhou Institute\"), was officially released. This is also the second international standard related to pigments drafted by this institute. Accurately determining the oil absorption of pigments is crucial for formulating coatings. Based on previous results obtained using international standards, as well as years of practical experience and relevant concepts, and taking into account the latest advancements in related testing technologies both domestically and internationally, CNOOC Changzhou Institute has proposed this revision plan for the international standard. This revision introduces numerous upgrades and improvements to the technical content of the standard. It proposes two methods for measuring the oil absorption of pigments, namely the small dropper bottle method and the burette method, and provides comprehensive and rigorous guidelines for the testing procedure, equipment requirements, and result control, thereby effectively enhancing the applicability of these methods and the reliability of the data obtained. Compared to the previous version of the standard, the revised document features more scientific and rational technical content, which will provide the industry with more accurate, reliable, and practical test results ; With a simpler operation process and a wider range of applications, it is expected to become one of the most important and frequently used method standards in the field of universal testing methods for pigments worldwide. CNOOC Changzhou Institute began preparations for the revision of this international standard in 2021, and in October 2023 it first proposed ideas for revising this standard at the ISO/TC256 meeting in Japan. These proposals were approved by ISO/TC256 through a resolution, and the revision process was launched. After going through the CD and DIS stages with voting processes, the standard was officially released this year. The release of this standard signifies that CNOOC Changzhou Institute’s technical expertise, test data, and research achievements in the field of testing basic properties of pigments have been recognized by the International Organization for Standardization. This further strengthens China’s technical position in international pigment standardization efforts, and it plays an important role in promoting the advancement and improvement of the quality of pigment products.
Oil absorption is a key parameter in paint formulation design; it is necessary to select pigments with an appropriate oil absorption level depending on the type of coating (such as primers, topcoats, powder coatings, etc.), in order to balance workability, film properties, and cost, thereby enhancing its technical significance in this regard.
