I’m not in the design field, nor have I dealt with stress-related issues before. I’m facing some problems now and am seeking help from experts. The pipeline for transporting phenol is several hundred meters long in a straight line, and it has shifted during operation. During this maintenance period, the company suggested modifying this section of the pipeline; essentially, they want me to determine how many expansion joints or metal hoses are needed, what specifications they should have, and what other requirements apply. I’m struggling because I’ve never been exposed to these things and have no idea where to start. I’m asking the experienced users here: how should I go about doing the calculations, and what data is needed? Please help me! ! !
A decision needs to be made after calculation; process conditions and operating conditions must be collected, along with detailed pipe diagrams, support layout diagrams, and support drawings. Using a U-shaped bend can be given priority.
This isn’t something that can be done in just a day or two; since you haven’t learned how to do it, I think it would be better for you to entrust a design institute to handle it. Stress issues are safety issues; I hope they will be given proper attention!

The original poster’s question needs to be clearly addressed; an article can be written on it. Also, even if the calculations are done for you, the results may not be directly usable. Since the pipe supports have already been installed, it is still necessary to submit the data regarding the forces acting on those supports to the structural design team for further analysis. If the thrust exerted by the new pipes on the supports exceeds the values specified in the original design, either the pipes need to be redesigned or the supports need to be rebuilt. Well, it’s impossible to modify the existing supports; under such circumstances, reevaluating the pipes is the only option. Good grief! It’s not an easy task either.
