Today, I’d like to talk about the layout of pumps. Issue 5: Pump Layout. I will still discuss the pump layout by referring to 20546, trying to cover any empirical insights that are not mentioned in 20546, as well as the important data and methods specified in the standards. Start. . . . . . 1. Pumps should be installed in an open or semi-open area; those located in cold or sandy areas can be placed indoors. Needless to say, this applies to sandy areas, but I’d like to mention it for cold areas as well. People have asked me this question before – pumps can operate without any problems at temperatures around minus 45 degrees, so why are they still installed indoors? I’m sure some of you might ask the same question. Those who work in design firms should go to the sites and work there for a while to understand this. In Xinjiang, where temperatures drop to around minus 45 degrees, it’s impossible to service pumps that are outdoors – not to mention trying to move them. Especially on a dark night, with almost no one around and the occasional howl of wolves in the background, the situation can only be described as “miserable”. So, I implore all designers to please install pumps indoors in such harsh conditions. 2. To reduce land use, pumps are generally installed beneath the pipe gallery. The specific requirements are as follows: when there are air coolers on the pipe gallery, if the operating temperature of the pump is below 340°C or when there are no air coolers, the centerline of the pump’s outlet pipe should be located 600–1200 mm outside the centerline of the pipe gallery columns. This is to avoid collisions with the foundation (except in cases where the pipe gallery has a large span) as well as to facilitate the redirection of the outlet pipe ; When it is greater than 340, it cannot be installed under the pipe tray; this is mainly to prevent the temperature of the pumps and pipes from affecting the efficiency of the air cooler. Below is a pump layout diagram for the air coolers on the pipe tray of 20546. 3. When pumps are arranged in rows, it is necessary to arrange them in groups in accordance with fire safety requirements, operating conditions, and the properties of the materials. They should be aligned using the centerline of the pump outlet or the edge of the pump foundation as a reference; the alignment line should be parallel to the pipe gallery. In cases of double-row arrangements, the power ends should face each other, with a maintenance passage left in between. The minimum net width of the passage is 2 m, and the minimum net height is 3.2 m. The distance between the operation area in front of the pump side and the walls on all sides is greater than 1 m. When a forklift is needed to move around during the maintenance of large pumps, a passage for the forklift must be reserved, taking into account the maximum width required by the items being handled. These widths are mainly considered for valve operation, maintenance, etc.; I’ll provide the drawings. Pumps with a medium whose auto-ignition point is higher than that of the fluid should be kept at a distance of at least 4.5 meters from pumps whose medium has an auto-ignition point lower than that, while the distance from such pumps to liquefied hydrocarbon pumps should be at least 7.5 meters. There should be no pipe racks above liquefied hydrocarbon pumps; process equipment of categories A, B, and C should be avoided as much as possible. If such equipment is necessary, it must be separated using fire-resistant partitions, along with the installation of sprinklers or fire hoses. 5. Except for the small pumps installed on a common foundation, the clear distance between the two pumps should not be less than 800 mm; for those on a common foundation, it should also not be less than 400 mm. 6. The foundation of the pump should be 300 mm above the ground level. When installing a filter in front of the pump inlet, the height of the pump foundation should meet the requirements for maintaining the filter elements. On-site, one often sees this filter installed at a 60° angle; it’s because of this lack of consideration that such a poor idea was adopted after construction. 7. Finally, and this is very important, the layout of the pump should meet the flexible design requirements of the connecting pipes. Below, I’ll provide a diagram of the pipeline; please try to arrange the pumps according to the relative positions shown in the diagram. And then here is another diagram showing the normal arrangement beneath the conduit tunnel. That’s all for this episode. Party A has all these weird requirements; we’ve already submitted three versions of the equipment layout, but they’re still not satisfied. Well, in any case, it feels like without any practical projects, there’s always something missing.

The pump is located in the pumping room; is steam fire suppression designed in accordance with regulations?
