Chloride ions, or potassium ions, are monitored during concentration acceleration – what is the connection to scaling? Isn’t it calcium and magnesium ions that cause scaling?

The concentration ratio is a parameter related to the circulating water system; factories generally require a value of 4–5, while chemical manufacturers usually prefer a value below 4. When the concentration ratio is high, scaling is more likely to occur in the water quality (since chemicals, particularly scale inhibitors, have a half-life, which represents their effective lifespan). Generally, chloride ions, potassium ions, and conductivity are measured, with the decision being based on the actual conditions of the heat exchangers in the plant. However, it cannot be determined solely based on ion concentration, as in reality, the components of the water used for replenishing circulating water are complex – including well water, municipal water, and steam condensate – and these need to be calculated separately.
The concentration ratio is an indicator used to measure the operational efficiency of a circulating water system. It is calculated as the chloride content in the circulating water divided by the chloride content in the fresh make-up water. The higher this ratio, the less fresh make-up water is needed, which can reduce operating costs. However, manufacturers generally recommend a value of around 5-7. If the concentration ratio is too high, the levels of calcium and magnesium ions in the circulating water will increase, leading to problems such as scaling. The amounts of fungi, algae, and foam will also rise; therefore, it is necessary to find a balance by keeping the concentration ratio within a certain range in order to ensure stable operation over a long period of time.
