I would like to ask everyone: there is a fixed-roof storage tank for methanol (Methanol B) with a capacity of around 50 m3 in the facility. After installing a flame arrester and a vent valve on the tank top, is it still necessary to use a nitrogen seal? According to the explanatory notes in clause 6.2.2 of the Petrochemical Regulations: For storage tanks with a volume of 200 m3 or less, floating roof or internal floating roof designs are not always available, making it difficult to choose an appropriate design. In particular, for vertical storage tanks with a volume of 100 m3 or less, such tanks are difficult to manufacture and may not be cost-effective. To meet the requirements for storing small quantities of materials and the actual needs of fine chemical plants, storage can be carried out using fixed-roof tanks with gas sealing or horizontal storage tanks. ”A nitrogen seal needs to be installed for the fixed roof. However, in actual design processes, methanol storage tanks are not installed in many devices. What is the reason for this, and are there any relevant standards to support it? I haven’t studied the specific provisions in detail. Generally speaking, the requirements regarding safety and environmental protection are increasing steadily. In the past, simply adding a water seal was sufficient for venting; later on, breathing valves and flame arresters were used, and in the future, nitrogen sealing will undoubtedly become standard practice

Nitrogen sealing – it should actually be called nitrogen dilution
In principle, according to the current ** and industry standards, no action is required. Currently, the tanks being managed are all various types of storage tanks with a capacity of over 75 m3. However, from the perspectives of environmental protection and safety, it is not ruled out that local authorities** and certain experts may demand the implementation of nitrogen sealing and other control measures.

The methanol tanks of the small cracking units encountered so far do not have nitrogen sealing taken into account.
