I would like to ask the experts on this forum. Initially, it was a project to produce methanol from 1 million tons of natural gas per year; however, due to shortages of natural gas in recent years, the system has been operating at partial capacity. The original design called for two synthesis towers to share one vaporizer (using the Lurgi synthesis tower technology). At partial capacity, the conversion rate is high, but the hydrogen-to-carbon ratio remains unstable. Now the leader is asking whether it’s possible to isolate one tower so that it can operate at full capacity. I would like to ask the experienced experts: is this idea feasible? Are there any companies that have implemented it? (Reducing production capacity – most likely, no such companies exist.) What needs to be noted? Do you have any suggestions?
This idea is theoretically feasible, but it requires detailed technical analysis and design modifications. Factors to consider include adjustments to the processes within the tower, modifications to the control system, and reconfiguration of safety valves and instruments. Moreover, switching to single-tower operation may also require corresponding adjustments to other supporting facilities. There is little practical application, as the issue of matching production capacity is generally taken into account during the design phase.
