The Inner Mongolia Baofeng coal-based new materials project uses coal as raw material to produce MTO-grade methanol via a space furnace; the DMTO-III technology developed by the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics is used for the conversion of methanol into olefins; KBR’s pre-depropanization olefin separation technology is employed, the Unipol gas-phase fluidized bed process is used to produce polyethylene, and Basell’s Spheripol combined liquid-phase and gas-phase process is used to produce polypropylene. The methanol production capacity is 7.42 million tons, utilizing 11 4,000-ton class water-cooled space furnaces arranged in 3 series. The olefin capacity is 3 million tons per year. In November 2024, the 1-million-ton-per-year olefin production line, which is part of the first phase of Inner Mongolia Baofeng Coal-based New Materials Co., Ltd.’s 3-million-ton-per-year olefin project, began operations and entered the production stage. The project produces over 4,000 tons of olefin products per day; through innovations in modern coal chemical technology, the energy consumption across the entire system is reduced by nearly 20% compared to the current level. All the equipment and devices used in this project are independently manufactured in China, achieving import substitution; 23 of these key core devices are at the world’s highest standard. It has achieved \"five of the largest capacities in the world\" for single-unit production facilities in areas such as gasification, purification, methanol synthesis, full-density polyethylene production, and steam cracking coupled with methanol-to-olefins separation, as well as \"three of the largest capacities in China\" for DMTO, polypropylene, and air separation units, thereby providing strong impetus for the high-quality development of China’s equipment manufacturing industry.
