The identification and re-evaluation of defect images on radiographic films obtained from radiographic inspection is one of the important criteria for assessing the quality of circumferential welds in pipelines. To effectively control failures in the circumferential welds of large-diameter, high-pressure, high-strength steel pipelines, domestic pipeline companies have carried out re-inspections of such radiographic films and investigations into defects that exceed acceptable limits. Due to the large volume of work involved in re-evaluating negatives and the high reliance on the professional experience of the evaluators, the efficiency of identifying serious defects is low. As the first large-diameter gas pipeline to be transferred in a fully digital format, the China-Russia East Line employs digital non-destructive testing methods such as digital radiography (RT) using film negatives, digital radiographic imaging (DR), and fully automated ultrasonic testing (AUT) for the inspection of circumferential welds. These methods have enabled the collection of high-quality sample data on defect characteristics, which is useful for the development of intelligent image evaluation techniques.
