The stirred tank reactor (STR for short) is undoubtedly the most commonly used and classic workhorse in the chemical industry. If you visit any chemical plant, pharmaceutical factory, or polymer synthesis facility, what catches your eye first are often these huge cylindrical \"iron pots\". If the distillation tower is the “digestive system” of a chemical plant, then the batch reactor is the true “heart” of such a plant. Countless amazing chemical reactions – from the aspirin you take every day to the special resins used on space shuttles – are all produced in these reactors. Batch reactors are so widely used because they are extremely flexible; just like a stewpot at home, they can be used to make soup, stir-fries, and even cakes.
1. The components of a kettle-type reactor: A standard industrial reaction vessel, in order to handle high temperatures, high pressures, severe corrosion, and intense heat release, has a structure that is much more complex than that of a household pressure cooker. Vessel Body: This is usually a cylindrical container with an oval-shaped end cap, used to hold the material and withstand internal pressures. The inner wall often requires glass lining or the use of special alloys for corrosion protection. Agitation System: This is the “soul” of the reactor. It consists of a motor and reducer at the top, a sealed mixing shaft, and an impeller at the bottom. Depending on the viscosity of the material, the impellers come in various forms such as turbine, anchor, and paddle types. Its task is to vigorously mix the materials to ensure thorough contact between the reactants. Heat Transfer System: Chemical reactions often involve intense heat absorption or release. Usually, a jacket is wrapped around the outside of the tank, or internal coils are wound inside the tank. Steam can be introduced to heat, while cooling water or chilled brine can be used to cool down, ensuring that the temperature inside the tank remains precisely at the value set by the process parameters. Baffles: This is a detail that many people tend to overlook. Several vertical steel plates are usually welded to the inner wall of the kettle. Without them, the liquid will form a single rotating \"large vortex\" as a result of stirring, preventing the material at the center from mixing with that at the edges. The function of the baffle is to disrupt the vortex, converting the tangential flow into strong axial and radial flows, thereby greatly improving the mixing efficiency. Shaft Seal: The mixing shaft rotates, while the tank body remains stationary and under pressure. To prevent toxic or flammable materials from leaking through gaps, extremely precise mechanical seals or magnetic drive seals must be used. 2. The two classic “operating modes” of batch reactors. Batch reactors are versatile because they can employ different feeding and discharging methods to implement various production processes: Batch Reactor (BR): This is the most typical “simmering mode”. Pour in all the ingredients at once → Cover and heat while stirring → Wait for the reaction to complete → Pour everything out at once. Advantages: Extremely flexible – the formula can be changed as needed, making it ideal for small-batch, high-value fine chemicals such as pharmaceuticals and fragrances. Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR): This is the “assembly line mode”. The raw materials flow in continuously from above, while the reaction products flow out continuously from below. The concentration and temperature of the material inside the reactor are completely uniform throughout the space. Advantages: Massive production capacity, extremely stable product quality, suitable for bulk basic chemicals (such as large-scale polymerization reactions).
