Ethyl acetate contains a small amount of propylene (about 5% by mass). Our current process involves first washing it with water; after separation of the layers, the mixture of water and propylene is removed, and the remaining ethyl acetate and propylene are then separated through distillation. However, the ethyl acetate obtained in this way contains moisture, and a large amount of water is used. Do anyone else have any good ideas?
Ethyl acetate can be dehydrated again by distillation in a packed tower. There doesn’t seem to be a good way to directly separate ethyl ester and propyl ester
OP, the boiling points of these two substances differ by 10.5–11.5 degrees. Theoretically, as long as the height of the distillation tower is sufficient and the arrangement of the packing and trays inside the tower is determined through calculations by equipment engineers, separation should be possible without any problems.
Reply to 4# bounyichen: Distillation certainly can be used to separate them, but since the content of propylene is already quite low, using distillation for separation requires a lot of energy and time. So, I’m thinking, isn’t there a way to first carry out extraction to separate out a portion of propylene, and then proceed with distillation, which would save time and energy? Do anyone have any good suggestions?
