I’d like to ask everyone for advice. I’m currently drawing equipment layout diagrams, and I need to represent columns and beams in these diagrams; however, I’m not quite clear about the difference between columns and beams. My searches on Baidu didn’t provide very clear explanations either
In architecture, beams and columns are two common structural elements. The differences between them are as follows: 1. Different functions: Beams are primarily used to support horizontal structures such as floor slabs or roofs, bearing lateral loads ; Columns are primarily used to bear vertical loads (such as the weight of floors) and transfer them to the foundation. 2. Different shapes: Beams are usually horizontal or inclined, while columns are vertical. 3. Different cross-sectional shapes: Beams usually have rectangular, circular, or T-shaped cross-sections ; Columns usually have a square or circular cross-section. 4. Different sizes: The beams are relatively long, with spans ranging from a few meters to several dozen meters ; The height of columns is relatively large, generally ranging from a few meters to several dozen meters. When drawing the equipment layout plan, it is necessary to indicate the positions of beams and columns separately, along with their corresponding dimensions and cross-sectional shapes, to ensure the safety and stability of the equipment. -
Beams and columns: Beams bear shear forces and bending moments, while columns mainly bear compressive forces
Simply put, beams are horizontal while columns are vertical.
