Double-acting cylinders do not have springs; they are not activated or deactivated by air pressure (although air pressure can be used to activate or deactivate them via the air supply line). In the event of a fault, the valve position remains unchanged. Single-acting cylinders contain springs, and it is necessary to have the option of operating them with air or without air, for safety reasons.
