Since the fire separation requirements for liquefied hydrocarbons are governed by petrochemical regulations, the fire separation distance between above-ground tanks and surrounding buildings is insufficient; therefore, it is planned to bury the liquefied hydrocarbon storage tanks underground. However, no mature designs exist for underground liquefied hydrocarbon storage tanks. Both the \"Code for Design of Town Gas Systems\" and the \"Code for Design of LPG Supply Engineering Projects\" mention that LPG can be supplied through buried pipelines. I’ve seen crude oil storage tanks that are buried underground. I’ve never seen liquefied hydrocarbon storage tanks buried underground.

Japan has semi-buried LNG tanks
It can be built underground, which requires a smaller safety distance compared to above-ground construction; however, due to issues such as inconvenience in operation, it is rarely built underground.
I’ve done work involving burying propane tanks, and there are indeed quite a lot of troubles involved!
For underground liquefied hydrocarbon storage tanks, the biggest risk is corrosion; any corrosion-related leakage would be catastrophic. The challenge lies in carrying out regular inspections – digging up the tanks every 3 years for inspection, applying anti-corrosion measures, and then covering them back up with soil is indeed very troublesome. Smaller filling stations may not bother to do this, and this represents the greatest hazard.
