Vanadium pentoxide is a catalyst. During the oxidative regeneration of the desulfurization solution, air first oxidizes the oxygen carriers (tannin, ADA). These oxygen carriers then oxidize the vanadium catalyst, converting it to pentavalent vanadium. The catalyst further oxidizes hydrogen sulfide into elemental sulfur, which settles out of the solution. The presence of vanadium pentoxide can reduce the potential difference between the oxidizing agent and the substance to be oxidized, thereby increasing the oxidation rate.
