In my opinion, the first step toward becoming an excellent engineer is to have the right mindset. Not long after leaving school, there are many things one has to adapt to, and since one doesn’t have the ability to change those things, one can only gradually learn to adapt to them. Even if one studies hard at school, what is learned are mainly basic theoretical concepts of a general nature, which are difficult to apply in actual work. As a result, it’s inevitable to encounter obstacles at work, and there may be many things that cause frustration. We are like little mushrooms that have just begun to emerge from the ground; perhaps the surroundings are dark, and perhaps no one pays attention to us. But we must always believe that as long as we keep working hard, the bright sunlight will eventually shine upon us. Secondly, determine a clear direction for yourself as soon as possible. Set a direction for yourself, not by deciding in advance what job you will have in a few years, or what position you will hold or what salary you will earn, and so on. It’s certain that we must keep moving forward, but the path in the workplace is like climbing a mountain; no matter how fast we turn left and right, we won’t reach the summit, and by working hard blindly we may soon lose our way. One must take each step carefully, while also remembering to stop for a short rest from time to time, look back at the path already taken, and then look ahead to see how to move forward; only by being on the right path can one reach the summit more quickly. I remember an old engineer saying, “An excellent engineer is by no means just the accumulation of technical skills and experience; it also involves insights gained from life and the refinement of one’s own values.” One must also be able to find one’s direction in a complex social environment and demonstrate the value of one’s life. ” Third, one must maintain a calm mind at work and avoid being impatient for quick results. Everyone is different; even among engineers, everyone follows a different path, so don’t compare yourself too much to others. Just because you are slightly inferior in certain aspects compared to others doesn’t mean you’re not excellent; it’s possible that you are both excellent, with only slight differences in those areas ； Similarly, don’t become complacent just because you do slightly better than others; otherwise, you might end up being in the same flawed situation. Learn with humility and dedication*, constantly improving oneself. Becoming an excellent engineer is a long process; putting too much pressure on oneself can actually cause one to lose interest. An excellent engineer should be able to work happily. Finally, do not use salary as your ultimate criterion for decision-making. Recently, I’ve seen many posts online comparing college students to migrant workers, claiming that going to college is useless and that it’s not as good as being a migrant worker. Money is a good thing; of course, the more, the better. But for those of us who have just graduated, there’s no need to worry too much about money. Focusing excessively on salary can make us lose interest in our work, and as a result we end up just going through the days, which only pushes us further away from getting a raise. In the initial stages of working, as long as we strive to improve ourselves, I believe what belongs to us will eventually come our way.
