Extraction? Distillation? Which method is better?
Toluene has a boiling point of 110.6°C, while butane has a boiling point of 79.6°C; the two do not form an azeotrope, so distillation is recommended as a method for separation.

Let’s take a look at the heat source in the factory area. If there is an abundance of hot water at around 100 degrees, distillation is certainly the better option, as it involves the utilization of waste heat anyway. In such cases, it’s necessary to analyze each situation individually; one cannot simply determine which method has higher investment or operating costs.
There is no best solution, only better ones. The best solution is to do things without spending any money! A better approach is to choose the best among the good ones.
Distillation should work well, as long as there is excess thermal energy available, including hot water.
The boiling points of these two materials differ significantly, and distillation is the most economical and convenient method for separation. If extraction is used, the extract and the solvent still need to be separated again; wouldn’t that make the analysis more expensive? If butane is extracted using water, butane then has to be separated from the water, and at this point the boiling points of water and butane become even closer to each other. The simplest way is to supply this mixture to other factories, while the owner’s factory purchases toluene and butane directly.
That’s true; it’s better to treat it as hazardous waste directly.
