When it comes to selection, there are many parameters such as the flow coefficient, and these concepts are similar to those used in the selection of control valves, orifice plates, etc... Thankfully, nowadays the selection process is handled by the instrumentation specialists, hahaha
In domestic design institutes, the calculation and selection of safety valves are handled by the process engineering department, while in foreign engineering companies, this task falls to the instrumentation and automation department. The responsibility lies not only with the companies but also with universities (research institutes), as well as within China’s current corporate culture.

Currently, in China, it is generally the process engineering, or more precisely, the process system, that is responsible for calculating safety valves. If the instrument is to do it, then who will propose the conditions? It’s still a process or process system; once all the conditions are specified, all that remains is calculation, and it’s the same for everyone. The key to selecting a safety valve lies in defining various operating conditions, and in this regard, instruments don’t have as thorough an understanding of the process as the engineering design itself. Abroad, the selection is determined by the instrumentation team; in fact, it mainly comes down to the division of labor between the two specialties, with certain tasks related to process systems being handled by the instrumentation team. For example: flow restriction orifice plates – some of these are also classified as instruments, but in China they are generally calculated as part of the process system.
Previously, the calculations related to safety valves were carried out by the process engineering team, and the selection of safety valves also fell within their responsibility. At that time, the company had samples of safety valves, and the selection was made based on those samples
The process has nothing to do with instruments; it does not require the involvement of instrument technicians
