Epoxy soybean oil acrylate coatings have become the \"new stars\" in the application of epoxy soybean oil coatings. According to experts, epoxy soybean oil acrylate is obtained through the esterification of acrylic acid and epoxy soybean oil; the essence of this reaction is an addition reaction between a carboxylic acid and an epoxide group. Due to the long molecular chains and low cross-linking density of epoxidized soybean oil acrylate, it can significantly improve the toughness and adhesion of coatings. In recent years, domestic research on epoxidized soybean oil for use in coatings has focused on UV-ray radical-cured epoxidized soybean oil acrylate systems, mainly because of its favorable price, strong photosensitivity, and excellent coating properties. The synthesis of epoxy soybean oil acrylate generally follows these methods: one is to directly carry out an esterification reaction between epoxy soybean oil and acrylic acid ; The second is the use of the semi-ester modification method, with the former being commonly employed at present. Union Carbide Corp of the United States (hereinafter referred to as UCC) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dow Chemical Company in the United States. The company currently has over 2,400 employees. UCC began researching epoxidized soybean oil acrylate in 1970 and filed a patent for this project in 1974. Epoxy soybean oil acrylate is the product of the reaction between soybean oil and acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, as well as the product of the reaction between soybean oil and organic isocyanates. These derivatives can be used alone, or in combination with photosensitizers, or as pigments in inks and coatings. The ink and coating compositions can be cured by light radiation. Due to the connection between UCC and Argentina’s TPS, the epoxidized soybean oil used in UCC is currently TPS’s GreenSoft D. Experts in this field at UCC say that GreenSoft D, with its high cost-performance ratio and environmental friendliness, has become a hot topic of research in the coating industry across the United States in recent years. Epoxy soybean oil acrylate coatings can be used as surface metalizing film coatings, and are suitable for producing cardboard varnishes, topcoats, wood finishes, pigments, and more. As the coating industry moves toward being more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient, the applications of GreenSoft D will continue to expand.
