Atmospheric storage tanks typically have a design pressure of only a few kilopascals; the failure of the nitrogen sealing control valve or fire conditions can both lead to overpressure inside the tank. Therefore, an emergency relief valve is usually installed. However, this emergency relief valve has a relatively low operating pressure – what is the difference between it and a safety valve? Or is this emergency relief valve the same as a safety valve?
That’s called a breathing valve, not a safety valve
Hello, it’s really not a breathing valve.
We also have a atmospheric pressure storage tank, equipped with a safety valve inside whose setting pressure is 5 KPa. What the design institute originally called it was a breathing valve, but it was actually just a single-breathing valve, as there is another set of control valves in use to regulate the pressure in our storage tanks. Although the names are different, their function is the same as that of a safety valve.
I consulted manufacturers that produce breathing valves, and I was told that the set pressure for such single-breath valves isn’t very high; it’s at most a few kilopascals. If the pressure is higher, then safety valves have to be used instead. It is also acceptable if the discharge rate of a single check valve can meet the requirements in situations such as fires.
