The total compression required to compress the pyrolysis gas in large ethylene plants is relatively high; generally, five stages of compression are used (four stages in some processes), and centrifugal compressors are typically selected. The reaction off-gas compressors in styrene plants generally use oil-free screw compressors, with the rotors typically cooled by water injection in order to reduce temperature rise during compression and the formation of self-polymerization products.
