With hydrogen energy being so popular these days and carbon neutrality gaining so much attention, which regions are developing large-scale methanol-to-hydrogen projects?
Coal is converted into methanol, which is then turned into hydrogen. It’s better to just use “coal-to-hydrogen” directly.
Coal-to-methanol production takes place in underdeveloped areas with abundant coal, while methanol-to-hydrogen production occurs in relatively developed areas with limited coal resources but high environmental standards. Hydrogen produced from coal is generally used in the chemical industry; very little of it is used for burning. There are applications where hydrogen flames are used for direct processing; uses such as heating boilers with hydrogen aren’t very common, though
I wonder that if hydrogen energy becomes the primary fuel in the future, and if the cost of producing hydrogen from methanol is very low, then since methanol is easy to transport, transporting it to the destination and then using it to produce hydrogen could also be a viable option!
