Issues with grid installation in fixed-bed reactors?

Why do some fixed-bed reactors have upper grids to hold the catalyst in place, while others don’t? Aren’t they worried that the catalyst will scatter around?
Looking at the gas flow direction, it’s not necessary if it’s from top to bottom
The upper and lower parts of the catalyst in the fixed-bed are separated by alumina magnetic balls, right?
