For the expansion bends in medium and high-pressure steam pipelines, 90-degree elbows with a large radius are commonly used; but are 90-degree elbows with a small radius or 45-degree elbows also suitable?
45-degree elbows are rare; there are more weld joints
Due to limited space, 45-degree elbows were used for the piping, and the stress calculations passed as well
The stress calculation also passed, so it can be used
A short radius is primarily considered to account for bending stress; generally, long-radius elbows should be used as much as possible.
There is a reason behind the common practices, but there is also a reason why long-radius 90-degree elbows are preferred; this preference has been established through nearly 90 years of practical experience, and it represents a relatively basic application issue.
