Can exhaust pipe installations take on a π shape, or what’s known as an inverted U shape, or a U-shaped form?
Theoretically, if there is no liquid in the exhaust gas, a U-tube is acceptable. As for why it was designed this way, the design institute can explain it during the drawing review.
The main hazard with a U-shaped design is the accumulation of liquid at the bottom, while the main issue with an inverted U-shaped design is the accumulation of light, toxic, harmful, flammable, and explosive gases at the top. Additionally, when exhaust gases are discharged outside, the pressure difference between the front and back is usually small; too many bends can lead to excessive pressure losses. If there are no issues with these points, then if it’s truly necessary and cost is not a concern, making a few detours is acceptable.
1. When installing elbows, it is necessary to calculate the pressure drop, as the inlet pressure of the exhaust gas treatment system must meet the design requirements. 2. In low-temperature conditions, such as during winter, U-shaped elbows are prone to accumulating liquid, which is a common cause of explosions in waste gas treatment systems (don’t ask me how I know). It is necessary to install drainage devices and to drain the accumulated liquid regularly.
The gas pipeline runs from Device 1 to Device 2; a reverse U-shaped tube is installed at the inlet of Device 2 to prevent liquid at the bottom of Device 2 from flowing back to Device 1.
