Yesterday, during our inspection, we referred to 7.5.3 of GBT18442.7 and asked a question: do the cross seams mentioned in item a and the T-shaped welds mentioned in item b refer to the same thing? Our quality assurance engineer said it was the same, but the inspector asked again: if it’s the same, then why aren’t the standards unified to use a mortise-and-tenon joint or a T-joint? We were left without an answer. Then I told our welding engineer about this, and he said the two are the same. I would like to ask the experts: do these two types of welds refer to the same kind of weld, or are they different? If they are different, what are the specific differences?
A butt weld and a T-joint weld generally refer to the same type of weld; both are welding methods in which two metal pieces form a shape similar to a “T” at their junction.
