The entire production process for metallocene PP catalysts at the Beijing Research Institute of Chemical Technology is now fully integrated. Recently, the metallocene polypropylene (PP) catalyst SMC-PL01, developed independently by the Beijing Research Institute of Chemical Technology, was used on a 60,000-ton/year loop-type polypropylene production facility owned by Zhongyuan Petrochemical, marking the first long-term industrial application of this catalyst in China. This marks a substantial breakthrough for Sinopec in the field of metallocene polypropylene, as it has now established a complete domestic industrial chain as well as full commercialization capabilities. It is understood that metallocene polypropylene, thanks to its excellent properties, is used in fields such as non-woven fabrics, spinning, injection molding, and film materials, and represents one of the important directions for the transformation and upgrading of the polypropylene industry. As the core of metallocene polypropylene production, the performance of catalysts directly affects product quality and production efficiency. Previously, the production of related catalysts in the country relied mainly on imports. The North China Institute of Chemical Technology has been dedicated to the research and development of metallocene catalysts for a long time; in 2022, it successfully developed the SMC-PL01 catalyst, and utilized the high-quality pilot-scale production facilities at the Tianjin Science and Testing Base to carry out pilot-scale production tests for this catalyst. In 2024, this catalyst was produced on an industrial scale for the first time at Sinopec Catalysts (Tianjin) Co., Ltd., filling the gap in domestic production of metallocene polypropylene catalysts. To ensure the successful application of this industrial catalyst, the metallocene catalyst technology team from Beijing Institute of Chemical Technology communicated repeatedly with Zhongyuan Petrochemical to optimize the process parameters, thoroughly analyzed various potential issues and prepared contingency plans. They also went to the production site at Zhongyuan Petrochemical in advance to make preparations for testing, working closely with the local production team for 7 days and nights straight. Results from practical applications show that the transition during the production process was smooth, product quality parameters remained stable during the trial production phase, and the polypropylene had good morphology. The success of this long-term industrial application has provided strong support for the steady mass production of metallocene polypropylene resins by Sinopec, boosting the confidence of downstream customers to gradually increase their usage levels. It has also contributed to the advancement of Sinopec’s polypropylene products toward higher quality and greater customization.
