The Rom 250,000 tons/year C2 route MMA project has been successfully commissioned! March 26, 2025 – On March 24, the Rom Group announced that its large-scale industrial methyl methacrylate (MMA) plant, built using its proprietary C2 route LiMA production technology, has been put into operation. The plant is located in Bay City, Texas, United States. Once fully operational, the Rombe City plant will produce 250,000 tons of MMA per year. By utilizing a new technology that relies on ethylene, natural gas, and methanol as raw materials, rather than traditional production methods, this approach not only increases the yield of the product but also significantly reduces energy consumption, as well as water waste and waste emissions. At the end of June 2023, Rohm announced that it would officially close its methyl methacrylate (MMA) plant in Westwego, Louisiana, by June 2025; going forward, all of its MMA production capacity in the United States would be transferred to the new plant under construction in Texas. In August 2023, Evonik signed an agreement to provide expanded production of custom catalysts for Röhm’s new methyl methacrylate (MMA) production plant in Bay City, Texas, USA. “These catalysts play a key role in Röhm’s newly developed LiMA (Leading in Methacrylates) technology for producing MMA efficiently while making use of resources and reducing environmental impact. In many ways, LiMA sets new standards and is the most efficient MMA production technology to date. ”
