April 9, 2025. Bookmark this page. This technology utilizes the “waste heat-driven internal material circulation” approach to address the challenge of cost-effectively treating phenol-containing coal gas water. Recently, the “internal circulation-based reduction technology for coal gas water,” independently developed by China Coal Research Institute Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as CCRI), successfully passed the technical appraisal organized by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation. The evaluation committee unanimously agreed that this achievement is unprecedented both domestically and internationally, exhibits high innovation, and represents an international leader in the treatment of wastewater from atmospheric-pressure two-stage gas generators. This technology achieves three major innovations. Firstly, a new process was developed for the reuse of phenol-containing wastewater in atmospheric-pressure two-stage gas generators; the residual heat from the lower stage of the gas generator is used to vaporize the phenol-containing wastewater at low temperatures, and this vaporized mixture is combined with air to serve as a gasifying agent that is then returned to the gas generator, thereby enabling the resource utilization of such wastewater ; Secondly, proprietary equipment such as multi-interface mass transfer devices and stepped heat exchangers was developed to make full use of the sensible heat of the gas from the lower section of the atmospheric-pressure two-stage gas generator, as well as the waste heat from the steam generated, thereby improving the energy efficiency of the gasification process ; Third, an industrial demonstration facility for the reuse of wastewater in atmospheric-pressure two-stage gas generators, with a total gas production capacity of 600,000 Nm³/d, has been built and put into operation in the field of industrial gases. It is reported that at present, China has nearly a thousand atmospheric pressure fixed-bed gasification units in various industries such as ceramics, building materials, and aluminum manufacturing, which are expected to produce over 3 million tons of gas and water each year. To address the challenge of cost-effective treatment of these phenol-containing gas and wastewater, this technology introduces a novel approach based on \"waste heat utilization–internal material circulation.\" Through key devices such as multi-interface mass transfer units and stepped heat exchangers, the waste heat from the raw gas produced in the gasification process is converted into a driving force for the system. As a result, the highly polluted phenol-containing gas and wastewater can be reused as gasifying agents after undergoing thermochemical conversion. This creates a closed-loop system in which pollution sources are transformed into resources, offering a new green transformation pathway for atmospheric-pressure fixed-bed gasification equipment in the industrial gas sector. This technology has been granted 2 authorized invention patents, and 6 papers have been published. Leveraging this technology, the first demonstration unit built and put into operation by the Coal Research Institute in Ulanqab in November 2023 continues to deliver ecological benefits. To date, it has processed nearly 10,000 tons of gas and water from 3 gasification units with a capacity of 200,000 Nm³/d each; this has resulted in a reduction of over 90% in the amount of phenol-containing gas and water, a reduction of over 50% in fresh water consumption, and a reduction of over 80% in the costs associated with treating such gas and water. As a result, enterprises save nearly 10 million yuan per year in costs related to the treatment of phenol-containing gas and water.
