Recently, the annual production capacity of 41,000 tons for bio-based composite materials at China Merchants Kaissai Biomaterials (Hefei) Co., Ltd. was made public. It is reported that the project is planned to require an investment of 468.5 million yuan. It will mainly produce 20,000 tons per year of composite products (with dimensions of 1.3m x 2m and a thickness of 0.3mm to 5mm), 3,000 tons per year of photovoltaic frame products (with lengths ranging from 300mm to 2,000mm), and 18,000 tons per year of building template products (with widths of 300mm to 1,500mm and lengths of 500mm to 3,400mm). The construction period for this project will be from April 2025 to December 2026. Bio-based polyamides are polymer materials synthesized from biomass-derived renewable resources. Monomers used for the production of polyamides are manufactured through biological, chemical, and physical methods; these include bio-based lactams, bio-based dicarboxylic acids, bio-based diamines, etc. Thanks to their green properties, environmental friendliness, and use of renewable raw materials, bio-based polyamides are widely applied in various fields such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, fragrances, the automotive industry, electronics, and consumer goods. China Merchants Kaissai Biomaterials (Hefei) Co., Ltd. was established in December 2024. It is a corporate entity funded and registered by Shanghai Kaissai Biotechnology Co., Ltd. The company focuses on researching and producing composite products using Kaissai’s proprietary bio-based polyamide resins, taking full advantage of the green, low-carbon, environmentally friendly, and energy-saving properties of these bio-based polyamide products for use in industries such as automotive, new energy, electronics and electrical equipment, rail transit, and industrial daily necessities. In recent years, Qiaixie Bio has been making continuous efforts in the field of bio-based polyamide composites, focusing on the development of a range of products as well as the further expansion of their applications in various downstream areas. The company not only engages in the research and development of new materials such as bio-based long-chain polyamides and high-temperature polyamides, but also actively pursues innovative projects including continuous fiber-reinforced bio-based polyamide composites, polyamide elastomers, polyamide foam/honeycomb materials, as well as the utilization of agricultural waste. In May 2024, Hefei signed a tripartite cooperation agreement with China Merchants Innovation and Kaissai Biology to jointly promote the development of the biomanufacturing industry. The three parties reached an agreement on the China Merchants Kaissai Synthetic Biology R&D Platform and industrial manufacturing base project. Under the agreement, the total investment for this project is estimated to be around 5 billion yuan, to be implemented in two phases. The first phase of the project requires an investment of 1 billion yuan, covering the China Merchants Kaissai Composite Materials project and the Kaissai bio-based polyamide modification project. The second phase is planned to involve an investment of 4 billion yuan (the exact amount will be determined based on project approval), and it will include collaborations between the project company and companies such as CATL and South Korean 3P companies, as well as further expansion of the production capacity from the first phase.
