Technology for producing lithium carbonate from salt lake brine wins an award June 3, 2025 Bookmark According to China Chemical News, a project focused on the research and industrialization of a method for continuously producing battery-grade lithium carbonate from low-grade salt lake brine with a high magnesium-to-lithium ratio, led by China National Chemical Corporation Donghua Engineering Technology Co., Ltd., was awarded the third prize in the 2023 Anhui Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. It is reported that this project, carried out jointly by Donghua Company and Golmud Zangge Lithium Industry Co., Ltd., focuses on addressing common challenges in the industry, with the aim of overcoming the key technical barriers to the efficient exploitation of halite resources in China’s northwestern region. The project team conducted in-depth research on the enrichment and transformation patterns of lithium ions in complex brine systems. By innovatively adopting adsorption-based techniques, they developed new process technologies and designed custom reactors, thereby creating a technical framework specifically tailored for extracting lithium from low-grade salt lake brines with high magnesium-to-lithium ratios. To date, this project has been granted 6 patents and has received numerous awards, including the Anhui Province Patent Gold Award and the National Excellent Engineering Consulting Achievement Award. Since 2018, the outcomes of this project have been applied in the 10,000 tons per year lithium carbonate production line of Golmud Zage Lithium Industry’s Phase I facility, enabling the successful production of high-quality battery-grade lithium carbonate products that are primarily used in the processing of lithium battery cathode materials. Furthermore, this achievement has also been successfully applied in the Mamico Salt Lake project in Tibet and the Huixin Lithium Carbonate project in Qinghai.

According to data from the Tianyancha app, Donghua Technology (002140) has newly received approval for an invention patent titled “An Efficient and Environment-Friendly Method and Device for Lithium Extraction from Salt Lakes”. The patent application number is CN202310057601.5, and the approval date is May 27, 2025. Patent abstract: The present invention relates to the field of lithium extraction from salt lakes. It constitutes an efficient and environmentally friendly method and apparatus for extracting lithium from salt lakes. The process involves passing brine derived from salt lakes through a pre-concentration unit, a pretreatment nanofiltration unit, a primary concentration unit, a secondary nanofiltration unit, a secondary concentration unit, an electrocarbon lithium precipitation unit, an industrial carbon lithium precipitation unit, and a tailings recovery unit, thereby yielding battery-grade lithium carbonate, industrial-grade lithium carbonate, and recyclable mixed salts containing heavy metals. By integrating a production method that combines three-stage concentration, two rounds of nanofiltration, and two stages of lithium precipitation, this invention can meet the lithium extraction needs of various types of salt lakes. It features low energy consumption, no need for external chemical agents, and is environmentally friendly, thus meeting the requirements for sustainable production. Meanwhile, it enables the efficient extraction of lithium while also allowing for the utilization of other resources present in the salt lakes, facilitating their comprehensive exploitation. Since the beginning of this year, Donghua Technology has obtained 16 new patent approvals, a 20% decrease compared to the same period last year. Based on the financial data from the company’s 2024 annual report, the company invested 312 million yuan in research and development in 2024, a 17.89% increase compared to the previous year.
