October 13, 2025 – Today (October 13), the “Chinese Academy of Sciences International Scientific Program on the Biological Conversion of Carbon Dioxide” was launched. Experts from around the world will use this program to further strengthen international scientific and technological cooperation, with the aim of overcoming the fundamental scientific challenges and technical barriers in the field of carbon dioxide fixation and biological conversion. The International Scientific Program on the Biological Conversion of Carbon Dioxide of the Chinese Academy of Sciences will unite world-class research efforts and, through interdisciplinary integration, conduct in-depth analysis of the mechanisms underlying carbon dioxide fixation and conversion, in order to design and develop more efficient artificial biological systems. Carbon dioxide is the primary greenhouse gas and also a valuable carbon resource; its efficient and large-scale biological conversion and utilization has become a cutting-edge scientific issue of global concern. In September 2021, the Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences achieved the world’s first artificial synthesis of starch from carbon dioxide, successfully developing an artificial pathway that involves only 11 reaction steps in the conversion of carbon dioxide into starch. This breakthrough opens up new avenues for addressing global challenges such as climate change and ensuring food security. Xiang Hua, Director of the Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences: The key issue we are focusing on at present is to overcome the problem of relatively low efficiency in the biological conversion and efficient utilization of carbon dioxide. This international scientific program provides an excellent platform that not only promotes the development of the biomanufacturing field but also helps address major challenges related to the sustainable development of human society, the economic sphere, and the Earth’s environment.
