Russia develops new polymer for absorbing petroleum products from water 2025-11-29 Researchers at St. Petersburg University in Russia have recently developed a new type of fibrous polymer that can not only efficiently absorb petroleum products from water but also be reused. According to the official website of St. Petersburg University, this material is a flexible film composed of numerous fibers with a diameter of less than 1 micron; by placing it on the surface of oil contamination, the adsorption process can be initiated. As the oil film gradually absorbs the oil stains, the edges of the white adsorbent begin to turn black, eventually turning black overall. As an adsorbent, this material can absorb various petroleum products. The maximum time required for adsorption is about two hours; each gram of this material can adsorb approximately 40 grams of petroleum. (
