Industrially, isopropylamine is primarily produced by the catalytic hydrogenation of acetone: using acetone, liquid ammonia, and hydrogen as raw materials, the reaction takes place under the action of nickel-based or copper-chromium catalysts at temperatures of 180–220°C and pressures of 5–15 MPa. Acetone first condenses with ammonia to form an imine intermediate, which is then hydrogenated in the presence of hydrogen to yield isopropylamine, with water being produced as a by-product. After the reaction mixture is treated with a deamination process to recover unreacted ammonia, the resulting water is removed in a dehydration tower, and separation and purification are carried out in a distillation tower, an isopropylamine product with a purity of ≥99.5% can be obtained; the by-product diisopropylamine also has commercial value. This process has advantages such as readily available raw materials, a mature production workflow, and high product purity, and it is currently the mainstream method for the industrial production of isopropylamine.
