Hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) is a high-value fluorinated fine chemical that, thanks to its excellent solvency, chemical stability, and low surface tension, is widely used in high-end fields such as pharmaceuticals, electronics, and lithium batteries. I. Product Definition Hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP), with the chemical formula C₃H₂F₆O, is a colorless and transparent liquid that has a distinctive irritating odor. In the field of pharmaceutical intermediates, HFIP is primarily used for the synthesis of sevoflurane. As a new type of inhaled anesthetic, sevoflurane sees continuous growth in global market sales; these sales reached approximately $1.25 billion in 2024, and it is expected to exceed $1.60 billion by 2030. As a key synthetic intermediate for it, the market demand for HFIP is closely linked to the sevoflurane market, maintaining steady growth. 2. In the field of electronic chemicals, it is primarily used for cleaning semiconductor wafers, as a solvent for photoresists, and in chip packaging. It can effectively remove impurities from the surface of wafers without damaging the chip structure, meeting the needs of the semiconductor industry’s trend toward higher precision and smaller sizes. 3. In the fields of lithium batteries and refrigerants, it can be used as a raw material for additives in electrolytes for lithium batteries ; In the field of refrigerants, it can be used to synthesize new types of environmentally friendly refrigerants. In other fields, it is employed as a solvent for high-end coatings, as an intermediate in the production of pesticides, and in the synthesis of fluoropolymers. Thanks to its low pollution level and high suitability, it is gradually replacing traditional solvents. III. Main production processes and technologies: The industrial production process of HFIP in China relies primarily on the catalytic hydrogenation method using hexafluoropropanone (HFA). 1. The catalytic hydrogenation method using hexafluoro-9-propanone (HFA) is dominant in China. This process uses hexafluoroepoxypropylene (HFPO) or hexafluoropropene as raw materials; through a reaction, hexafluoro-9-propanone (or its hydrate) is formed, which is then subjected to catalytic hydrogenation to produce HFIP. Manufacturing companies include Coromant in the United States, Unimatec in Germany, as well as companies in China such as Haisfu, Sinochem Blue Sky, and Dongyue Group. Breakthroughs have been achieved in domestic technology, with leading firms like Haisfu possessing the complete production technology for converting HFPO into HFIP. 2. Capacity planning: Dongyue Group plans to build a production capacity of 2,000 tons per year of hexafluoroisopropyl alcohol, as part of its project to produce tens of thousands of tons of downstream derivatives of hexafluoroepoxypropane. Sinochem Blue Sky has also planned a project for the production of high-end fluorine-containing fine chemicals, with an annual output of 1,100 tons of hexafluoroisopropanol
IV. Market supply and demand dynamics: The HFIP market is characterized by tight supply and high prices. This is mainly due to an overall supply shortage in the fluorine chemicals industry, a decline in industry inventory, coupled with strong demand from downstream sectors, which forces leading companies to operate at full capacity. Given the long cycle required for the expansion of fluorine chemical production capacity, it takes time for new capacity to reach full operation, which means that supply shortages in the short term are unlikely to be resolved quickly. V. Product Prices and Profits The current HFIP market is in a period of strong demand; spot prices are already at high levels, and these high prices are driven primarily by tight supply and demand conditions. Although industry reports lack classified (industrial-grade/electronic-grade) prices and accurate profit figures, it can be inferred that in a market environment characterized by supply constraints and strong demand, leading companies with stable production capacity and advanced technology are able to achieve substantial profit margins. VI. Major Manufacturers According to industry reports, the key players in China’s HFIP market include Sanming Haishifu Chemical Co., Ltd. (Haishifu), Sinochem Blue Sky Fluorine Materials Co., Ltd., Shanghai Huayi Sanyafu New Materials Co., Ltd., and Shandong Dongyue Future Hydrogen Energy Materials Co., Ltd., among others. Among them, Haishufo is a leader in this industry, ranking first in the world in terms of sales of hexafluoroisopropanol. It supplies the key raw material HFIP to domestic sevoflurane manufacturers such as Haixi United Pharmaceutical. VII. Industry Development Trends 1. Continuous growth in demand, with expansion of application areas. The steady growth of the pharmaceutical market, including agents such as sevoflurane, and the rapid development of electronic industries such as semiconductors will continue to drive demand for HFIP. Its value as a high-performance solvent and key intermediate will become even more prominent. 2. Integration of the industrial chain and increased concentration. Companies that possess a complete industrial chain ranging from upstream HFPO to downstream HFIP and its derivatives (such as sevoflurane intermediates), such as Haisufu, will have stronger cost control capabilities and market competitiveness. 3. It is affected by the overall cycle of the fluorine chemical industry. As a fluorine-based fine chemical, the market fluctuations of HFIP are closely related to the overall supply and demand in the fluorine chemicals industry. The current supply constraints and high prices in the fluorine chemicals industry are directly contributing to the high levels of HFIP prices.
