【Haichuan Teahouse】Researchers at Shanghai Jiao Tong University have developed CO2-based fluorinated polycarbonates

The 25th National \"Safety Production Month\" in 2026: Everyone talks about safety, and everyone knows how to handle emergencies; identifying and addressing risks and hazards. -------------------------------------------------- Recently, the Tangshan research team at the Center for Transformative Molecular Frontiers Science at Shanghai Jiao Tong University reported a new strategy for the synthesis of fluoropolymers based on carbon dioxide (CO2) as well as their closed-loop recycling. This work first developed a photoinduced, metal-free carboxylation cyclization reaction, which efficiently converts CO2, homoallylic alcohols, and perfluoroalkyl iodides into fluorinated six-membered-ring carbonate monomers. These monomers were then used to prepare a series of fluorinated polycarbonates via ring-opening polymerization. These series of materials not only allow for the adjustment of both the length of the fluorine-containing side chains and the mechanical properties, but also possess high transparency, low refractive index, hydrophobicity, as well as excellent ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability as solid electrolytes. Furthermore, under the catalysis of lithium salts, it can be efficiently depolymerized and regenerated into the original monomer, with a recovery rate as high as 95%, thus achieving a closed-loop chemical cycle for high-performance fluorinated polymers.
