Protection and monitoring against corrosion leakage beneath insulation layers

The friends upstairs added very useful points; especially since PEC, as a method for large-scale screening, is indeed much less hassle compared to removing the insulation layer. Based on my on-site experience, I would like to add that if the operating temperature of the equipment is high (for example, above 100°C), the varying water absorption properties of the insulation material can affect the corrosion rate. It is recommended to check whether the insulation material contains soluble chloride ions during the selection process, or to wash it before installation, in order to prevent accelerated local corrosion due to defects in the insulation material itself. Additionally, in areas where there are frequent starts and stops, the condensation water resulting from temperature fluctuations will keep entering and exiting the insulation layer. In such conditions, in addition to installing probes, it is advisable to add additional drainage openings at the lowest points; combined with regular infrared inspections, this can help detect the presence of accumulated water at an earlier stage. Of course, the process parameters vary greatly depending on the scenario, and a specific plan needs to be determined through on-site evaluation—but more communication always helps avoid mistakes.
