The main issue is not understanding the term ‘paramagnetic’.
Oxygen has a much greater paramagnetic property than other common gases or hydrocarbons; it seems to be able to cause the moving parts of the sensor to move, thereby generating an electric current. I’m not entirely sure about this, hehe. All I know is that paramagnetic oxygen analyzers are commonly used in such devices, as compared to zirconia: 1) they have a wider pressure range of operation, 2) they offer higher precision, and they come with a pre-treatment system
Let me ask further, what is preprocessing?
It’s just gas pretreatment, removing water and impurities – nothing more; it has little to do with your question. . . Generally, for zirconia-type sensors, they are used in furnaces; there is basically no water or impurities inside the furnace, so naturally there is no need for oxygen analyzers. The oxygen analyzers used in the UOP reforming and regeneration processes are also of the zirconia type, and there are pre-treatment units as well
The phenomenon of convection can be understood vividly in this way: when a strong magnetic field is present and the magnetic flux density varies, freely moving molecules or substances tend to move toward areas where the magnetic field strength is higher. Just like a magnet attracting iron filings. When there are oxygen molecules in the gas mixture, as the gas passes through a strong magnetic field, the oxygen molecules move toward the direction of the magnetic field.
Paramagnetic oxygen measurement – the technology seems not to be very mature at the moment. There are too many magnetic devices used in workshops, which cause a lot of interference.
