Regarding the compensation wire for thermocouples

We know that in order to maintain a constant temperature at the cold junction, a wire is needed to connect the cold junction of the thermocouple to a control room where the temperature remains relatively constant. So, I have a question: how does the compensation wire use copper wires to ensure that the temperature at the cold junction is the same as that in the control room? Is it my understanding that’s wrong?
Compensation wires are not ordinary copper wires; they are made from materials that possess the same thermoelectric properties as thermocouples at ambient temperatures. Since thermocouples are generally expensive, compensation wires are relatively cheaper, and therefore they are used to extend thermocouples into control rooms where the temperature is relatively stable.
