One of our company’s client’s equipment supervisors now needs us to supply him with a manual operator for a process control instrument, so as to facilitate on-site setup and adjustments. I would like to ask: 1. The instruments we supply them come from different brands – for example, Emerson and EMAG for certain components, while pressure transmitters are from Yokogawa. Can the handheld controllers be used universally? For instance, can a Rosemount handheld controller recognize all of these instruments, and can it also be used to adjust Yokogawa instruments? Is it true that they all operate based on the HART protocol, which allows for such adjustments? ； 2. Which model would be better to pair with it? Thank you!

OP, first of all, you need to determine the communication protocol standard! The commonly used and standard protocol nowadays is HART, and HART field devices corresponding to this protocol are also relatively easy to find, such as Rosemount’s 375, 475, or other inexpensive compatible products (of domestic manufacture). At the same time, with the trend of globalization and technological advancements, Japanese manufacturers such as Yokogawa are no longer sticking to their own protocols (Japanese manufacturers are peculiar in that, for reasons of technical secrecy or containment, they develop their own communication protocols, like those used by Yokogawa in the past); they have also begun to support the HART protocol. Therefore, it is recommended to purchase a HART protocol handheld device (imported Rosemount 375, 475, or domestic compatible products) to communicate with and adjust the instruments.
Any device that supports the HART protocol can be controlled using a 475 communicator; currently, most devices are compatible with it, including mainstream brands such as Rosemount, Xi’an Instrument, and Fuji, all of which can communicate via this interface.
The process calibrators specifically used for our instruments are the FLUCK741B, as well as the Emerson HART475 handheld controller.

But setting aside these issues and focusing solely on the hand controllers, Emerson’s 475 model stands out; there are versions of the 475 that support only the Hart protocol, and others that support both the Hart protocol and the FF bus protocol. Since they are part of the Hart Foundation, it contains description files for various devices from major mainstream brands, including different series and models of pressure, temperature, flow, level, valve, and positioner devices – essentially covering all Hart protocol instruments available on the market. When making the selection, one can also opt for an upgrade option; this way, even if new instruments are released on the market in the short period after purchase, Emerson can provide a free upgrade to enable the 475 to support these newly available products. It’s no problem if you don’t choose an upgrade option during selection; you can always pay the extra cost to perform an upgrade. Of course, the price of 475 is also quite high; compared to some domestic standard manual controllers, its price is simply exorbitant, and its functions are beyond what domestic manual controllers can offer. Currently, the Emerson 375 model is no longer available for purchase, and related sales, maintenance, and upgrades have been discontinued. The only option available is the 475 model, which comes in a Chinese version; it is necessary to select the Chinese code when making the selection. It should be noted that the language setting cannot be changed within the 475 model’s internal settings, so if a Chinese version is desired, the Chinese code must be selected at the time of ordering
