Water meters are widely used in daily life, and intelligent remote-transmission water meters, which feature stable performance, accurate measurement, and easy operation, have attracted considerable attention in today’s society. Among remote transmission water meters, there are two well-known types: direct-reading remote transmission water meters and pulse remote transmission water meters. Direct-reading remote transmission water meters are more popular among consumers due to their unique advantages. So, what are the advantages of direct-reading remote transmission water meters over pulse remote transmission water meters? 1. Reading is not affected by power outages or interruptions in electricity supply. The data displayed on an optical direct-reading water meter is the value shown on the dial, not pulse accumulation data. The data from direct-reading water meters is mechanically recorded on rotors; no power is required under normal conditions, with power being supplied only at the moment of data reading. Therefore, there is no need to worry about power outages or broken connections. Theoretically, the data it reads is consistent with the data on the dial. The signal emitted by a pulse water meter is in the form of pulses, and the microcomputer adds up these pulses sent over a distance to obtain data; if the addition is accurate, this data will be equal to the value indicated on the meter’s dial. However, during this accumulation process, the water meter must remain powered; if the power supply is interrupted or the backup battery runs out of power, the accumulation will be halted and data errors will occur. After it is repaired, the starting value also needs to be set again. 2. More accurate meter reading: Remote water meters allow for direct reading of the meter’s ‘window value’, which reduces the risk of errors associated with pulse accumulation and eliminates cumulative errors. The electronic part of the direct-reading meter has no mechanical contact with devices such as the counter inside the meter, and is not affected by vibrations that could cause errors. Data is read instantaneously during meter reading, unaffected by electromagnetic interference. Therefore, the meter reading data is accurate and reliable. 3. Greater convenience in meter reading: Direct-reading remote water meters allow for the direct reading of the meter’s display value; there is no need to set parameters such as the initial reading or meter constants, nor is it necessary to store any data, making them convenient and practical to use. 4. Low power consumption – The electronic sampling device of these low-power, energy-saving direct-reading remote transmission water meters is powered by a relay only during meter reading; it has no internal power source and remains inactive at other times, thus consuming no electricity and resulting in **reduced power consumption**. 5. Safety features against lightning and other hazards: Since the electronic components in direct-reading remote water meters do not operate under normal conditions, they are isolated from the outside world. As a result, they are not affected by external electromagnetic interference, nor do they cause interference to other low-voltage systems. **This improves the ability to protect against lightning and prevents electromagnetic interference. 6. Long service life of the system: Since direct-reading remote transmission meters do not need to operate for extended periods of time, they are protected from various types of interference that can occur during operation (such as lightning, static electricity, etc.). They operate only for short periods of time when taking readings, which **extends the service life of the meter reading system**. 7. The system engineering is easy to install, requires minimal maintenance, and has low costs. It uses a 485 bus system, which simplifies wiring; the direct-reading metering system eliminates reading errors. The main task of maintenance is to care for the communication lines, saving time and effort. The system does not require continuous power supply or backup batteries, and it consumes no power when not in use; as a result, it requires little maintenance and has low costs. 8. The openness of the system adopts a fully open design philosophy, taking full account of compatibility with various other systems. Direct-reading remote water meters, combined with a prepaid meter reading system for communities, enable automated meter management, offering functions such as data querying, automatic settlement, top-up payments, alarm alerts, and remote valve control.
