When the pressure gauge is under overpressure, pressure can be released through this small hole, preventing the gauge from bursting from the front and causing injury.
When a pressure gauge is used to measure gases or toxic liquids, there is a safety vent on the back of its casing (covered with rubber). In this way, when the Bourdon tube or connections leak or get damaged, the pressure inside the case will push open the safety valve, preventing the pressure from breaking through the front glass and causing injury.
