For a new project, the cables have been in use for half a year and have suffered severe oxidation; this applies to both electrical cables and instrumentation cables. I would like to ask everyone what could be the cause? Is it a cable quality issue?
With such a fast oxidation rate, does your company have an ammonia synthesis plant, or is there ammonia in the air?
The oxidation and discoloration (blackening) of the ends of copper conductors in ordinary cables is caused by exposure to humid environments or rainwater during use, which leads to a chemical reaction between the copper conductor, oxygen, and water, resulting in discoloration (blackening). How is your environment?
Under what operating conditions is this used? One possibility is that a humid environment causes blackening and oxidation; another possibility is that corrosive gases are at fault. It is necessary to examine the actual operating conditions in order to identify the cause and come up with a solution.
It is used in the ammonia-based desulfurization section of boilers, but in distribution rooms and cabinet areas. There are no corrosive gases in air separation units; however, humidity might be an issue, especially since the rainy season has just passed. Yet in similar environments, cables that have been in use for several years have not exhibited such problems. Therefore, I suspect there may be an issue with the cables themselves. I would appreciate any advice from everyone, or any other methods for diagnosis and testing.

The oxidation of copper wires is usually caused by ammonia corrosion. Other things that corrode copper don’t do it as quickly. It’s a normal phenomenon; consider the sealing in the junction box – there’s nothing that can be done about it, as air containing ammonia is bound to be present.

The conditions for the formation of black copper oxide must be a corrosive environment. A single instance of moisture alone cannot produce it. The cable specifications vary, like those in your picture. It’s not possible that it’s all a quality issue. It must be acidic substances in the air. It’s too corrosive.
