What is the reason for the high readings from the ultrasonic flowmeter used for measuring water volume? Two different flowmeters have been used, but the problem persists
The influence of upstream and downstream straight sections on the measurement accuracy of ultrasonic flowmeters. The calibration coefficient K is a function of the Reynolds number; as the fluid transitions from laminar flow to turbulent flow, the velocity distribution becomes uneven, causing the calibration coefficient K to change significantly and leading to a decrease in measurement accuracy. According to the application requirements, the ultrasonic flowmeter transducer should be installed at a position where there is a 10D straight pipe section upstream and a 5D straight pipe section downstream. When there are devices such as pumps or valves upstream, the length of the straight pipe section should be as large as possible, with the transducer placed as far away as possible from sources of turbulence, vibration, heat, noise, and radiation. If there are devices such as pumps or valves upstream of the installation location of the ultrasonic flowmeter transducer, a straight pipe section of at least 30D is required. Therefore, the length of the straight pipe section is the main factor ensuring measurement accuracy. 2. The influence of pipeline parameter equipment on the measurement accuracy of ultrasonic flowmeters. The accuracy of pipeline parameter settings is closely related to the accuracy of measurements. If the settings for the pipe material and size do not match the actual values, it will result in an error between the theoretical flow cross-sectional area of the pipe and the actual one, leading to inaccurate final results. Furthermore, the transmission spacing between the transducers of an ultrasonic flowmeter is determined through comprehensive calculations based on various parameters such as the fluid (sound speed, dynamic viscosity), the pipeline (material and size), and the installation method of the transducers. Any deviation in the installation distance of the transducers can also lead to significant measurement errors. Among them, the setting of the pipe inner diameter and the installation distance have a significant impact on the measurement accuracy. According to relevant data, if the inner diameter of the pipeline has an error of ±1%, it results in a flow rate error of approximately ±3% ; An installation distance error of ±1mm will result in a flow rate error within ±1%. It can be seen that only by correctly setting the pipeline parameters can an ultrasonic flow meter be installed accurately, thereby reducing the impact of these parameters on the measurement accuracy. 3. The influence of the ultrasonic flowmeter transducer installation position on measurement accuracy. There are two ways to install transducers: reflective and direct-type. If a direct-installation configuration is used, the sound speed travel distance is short, which can enhance signal strength. 4. The impact of the coupling agent on measurement accuracy. To ensure full contact with the pipe, a layer of coupling agent needs to be applied evenly over the pipe surface when installing the transducer; the typical thickness is (2mm–3mm). Remove the bubbles and particles from the coupling agent so that the transmitting surface of the transducer is in close contact with the tube wall. Flow meters used to measure the flow rate of circulating water are often installed in water wells, where the environment is humid and they may sometimes be flooded. If ordinary couplings are used, they will fail within a short time, affecting the accuracy of measurements. Therefore, a special waterproof coupling agent must be used, and it should be utilized within its expiration date, which is generally 18 months. To ensure measurement accuracy, the transducer should be reinstalled every 18 months, and the coupling agent should be replaced.

Ultrasonic methods have low precision and are expensive. An electromagnetic flowmeter can be used as a replacement.
Electromagnetic is the best; it’s lucky if ultrasonic can be used for measurement

Additionally, the installation distance of the ultrasonic probe, as well as the pipe wall thickness, material, and temperature, can all have an impact. If there are bubbles and impurities in the water, it might be high
