Both single-flange and double-flange types measure liquid level based on the pressure sensed by the flange diaphragm; In the case of an open-container (or a container with constant pressure), the gas pressure above the fluid remains unchanged; therefore, any change in pressure corresponds to a change in liquid level. In other words, a single flange is sufficient to accurately measure the liquid level. If the gas-phase pressure is unstable and changes, then the signal transmitted to the diaphragm box is a combination of the liquid level change and the gas-phase pressure change; in such a case, a single flange cannot determine which one represents the liquid level change and which one represents the gas-phase pressure change. Therefore, double flanges must be used, as they allow the gas phase pressures to cancel each other out within the diaphragm boxes of the double flanges.
