The protective ball of a glass plate level gauge is used to prevent the gauge from breaking under conditions of excessive internal pressure or sudden loss of pressure. They are usually located at both ends of the level gauge; when pressure changes suddenly, the protective balls move to prevent liquid from flowing in or out, thereby protecting the level gauge. When putting the level gauge into use, the needle valve should be slightly opened first to allow the pressure inside the level gauge to equalize gradually. Wait until the pressure inside the level gauge is roughly equal to the pressure inside the equipment, and then fully open the needle valve. The level gauge can still be protected even if the needle valve is not fully opened, because when there is a sudden change in internal pressure, the protective ball can still move to prevent liquid from flowing in or out. However, if the needle valve is only slightly opened, the flow of liquid inside the level gauge may be restricted, which could affect the accurate reading of the liquid level. If the needle valve is fully open, it generally does not cause the protective ball to block the passage. The dimensions of the protective steel ball design should be such as to not hinder the normal flow of liquid. However, if there are many impurities inside the level gauge, there is a risk of blockage. Therefore, it should be cleaned and maintained regularly during use. Overall, fully open needle valves should enable more accurate level readings, but care must be taken during operation to prevent sudden changes in internal pressure.
