I’m female, hold a master’s degree from a 211 university in Beijing. I started working last year, and it’s been exactly one year now. I work at a research institute directly affiliated with one of the major oil companies, where I am responsible for instrument design as part of process package development. Lately, my supervisor has been constantly urging me to change jobs (it’s frustrating). . . . ), saying that there is no future here, that the salaries are low, and suggesting that I learn *programming to work in software development. They basically don’t teach me anything; in recent years they haven’t even involved me in control system projects either. My progress has been slow over the past year, and I’m confused about what to do next. Should I really change careers? Please, seniors, show me the way!

Controlling the three major oil companies just means installing a DCS system and using some configuration software – what’s so difficult about that? The instrument design work in a design institute probably involves selecting the appropriate models and then drawing wiring diagrams, right? ,,, What else needs to be done? I’ve never worked at this design institute, so I don’t understand it.
As long as there is still a desire to learn from a mentor, it doesn’t really matter whether to change jobs or not. No matter where you go, you can only do menial work ; Although the research institutes of the three major oil companies may not be able to sustain themselves, they certainly won’t go hungry ; Instrument engineers can’t make a lot of money; those who really earn big sums from projects possess skills in networking and interpersonal relationships, while engineers serve merely as a stepping stone (including academic qualifications as well). In the world, a hundred or so people are enough to conduct genuine research on self-control, and more than half of them are mathematicians. Only the setter can do engineering work.
Many young people have this mindset; they feel that they can learn nothing at their workplace, not only in design firms but also in factories. I can only say that you haven’t really bent down to learn* and to study! I have worked with instrument technicians from the major design institutes of the three major oil companies, and not all of them are truly competent! Moreover, control system configuration is not something that design institutes need to learn; field instruments are even more complex, in addition to the need to understand and master various standards. Even the standards have aspects that are not practical, and all of this requires long-term experience.
