I divide the components of a DCS system into three levels: the first level is the field level, the second level is the control level, and the third level is the operation level. Another important component is communication, which runs through the entire system; it is essential at all levels, from one to three. Field level: The field level refers to the instruments and corresponding actuators on-site. As we know, many manufacturing enterprises implement DCS systems in order to automate their production processes; this requires real-time monitoring of various production parameters such as temperature, pressure, flow rate, liquid level, etc., as well as control over certain actuators such as control valves, switch valves, and various circulation pumps. The role of the field level is to collect the real-time parameters of these devices and feed those parameters back to the control level; for the field level, it functions like our eyes and hands, responsible for collecting data and carrying out actions. Control level: The control level is essentially the core of the entire DCS system. It includes the system’s CPU, network, and various modules, which are responsible for analyzing the data transmitted from the field level. Using appropriate programs within the system, it determines the necessary control actions. In other words, the control level functions like our brain – it processes the information we receive and then sends out commands through the nervous system to our limbs, that is, it receives information from the field level, performs calculations, and then outputs those results to the actuators in the field level. Operation level: The operation level can actually also be referred to as the upper-level computer. Regarding the system’s processing structure, we need to be able to view it in real time using appropriate configuration software. There are also many devices that require manual control, such as manually switching valves or starting certain circulation pumps; these actions all need to be carried out by operators through the computer-based configuration software. The operation level can be divided into various permission levels in order to restrict access to the system. There is the operator level, which allows for operating devices and viewing data, while another level is the engineer level, which grants access to the core aspects of the system, enabling changes to its control methods, among other things.
