However, in several recent accidents, the gas detectors suddenly stopped functioning. Objectively speaking, quality issues account for only a small portion of the reasons behind the malfunction of alarms; the vast majority of cases are due to improper use by people. So how should an alarm be used correctly? Myth 1: Alarm devices can be used indefinitely. Nowadays, the vast majority of companies purchase gas detection alarms, and they do not replace them after installation and acceptance; in some cases, these devices are still in use even after their useful life has expired. This is very dangerous. After all, gas detectors are also electronic devices, and the circuit boards in electronic devices have a service life; over time they tend to age. In particular, the sensors of alarms have a very precise specified lifespan. Therefore, after purchasing an alarm device, companies need to replace or repair it when its service life comes to an end. It is advisable to replace the sensor or service the toxic gas detector every 2 to 3 years. It is advisable to replace the sensor or repair the entire combustible gas detector every about 5 years. In addition, the alarm device also needs to have its dust removed regularly, and it is necessary to check whether the circuit board is aging or corroded. Dust and other harmful substances that corrode and cover the sensing elements of the alarm reduce the sensitivity of those elements. Myth 2: Once a gas alarm is installed, no maintenance is required. All products purchased need to be maintained, and gas alarms should be calibrated regularly. To prevent dust from clogging the sensor’s pores, which could lead to reduced sensitivity of the instrument, as well as measurement errors and data drift due to untimely calibration. Regular maintenance can even extend the service life of gas detection alarms, thereby helping companies save on procurement costs. Myth 3: Catalytic combustion-type combustible gas detectors can measure organic combustible gases (volatile organic compounds). Many customers overlook the effectiveness of these gas detection alarms in an attempt to save on purchase costs. Many companies choose catalytic combustion gas detectors, which do not yield satisfactory results, when measuring volatile organic compounds. Such detectors not only have poor detection performance and low accuracy for such gases, but also have a short service life. The correct choice is to use a detector based on a PID photoionization sensor; although its price is slightly higher, it offers high measurement accuracy. It effectively prevents personal injury and takes protective measures against gas leaks.
