I have just started working at a private company, and I noticed that many of the signal cables coming from the field using DCS are single-core wires. In my previous company, all signal cables were multi-core. What are the advantages and disadvantages of these two types of wires as instrument signal cables?
Are you saying a direct two-core cable goes into the DCS without a junction box?
I think what the original poster is asking about is the difference between solid wires (with a single core) and stranded wires (with multiple twisted cores). I believe the main difference lies in whether you prefer solid or stranded wires when it comes to wiring

It’s about your company saving money – multi-core signal cables are definitely better than single-core ones; they’re also softer and easier to connect.
There are few single-pair core failures. There are problems online, and sometimes they’re really unexplainable.

Additionally, if there is vibration in the field environment, the screws securing the terminals of single-strand solid wires can easily come loose and cause a break in the connection; whereas multi-strand flexible wires, being softer, will not break apart due to slight loosening, unless the screws are completely undone. Therefore, for on-site signal wires, multi-strand flexible core cables are more suitable.
