Are domestically produced instruments such as flow meters, pressure transmitters, and magnetic flap valves more competitive? There are also many joint-venture brands. Especially for devices like densitometers, shouldn’t Chinese people be more proactive in developing them, rather than waiting for the patent period to expire before imitating foreign products?
The most fundamental issue is to develop technical strengths, pursue long-term growth, and create products with unique features.
Domestic instruments lack any core competitiveness and can only compete on price. Research and development require substantial funding and manpower, which ordinary small and medium-sized enterprises do not have the capacity or capital for. Most large domestic instrument manufacturers also engage in joint development. Domestic instruments are in a rather awkward position. Engaging in price wars is the only option, but lowering prices means a shortage of funds for research and development; if the product’s performance is poor and there is no market for it, then further price cuts are necessary. For reasons related to precision, safety, and quality, large domestic factories generally opt for imported brands. After all, large-scale enterprises no longer worry about every detail when purchasing equipment. Only in some unimportant locations related to utility systems are domestic-brand instruments used. Moreover, small workshops in China that have developed within the industry have also disrupted it. It’s either in a cutting-edge industry or in this awkward position of being neither here nor there.

I visited several chemical manufacturing companies, and I can only say that domestic brands are trash; (to keep things polite, I’ll say “most of them” – most of them are trash.) I hope this isn’t taken personally. I just said how I felt.

The difference between domestic and imported products lies mainly in their core technical competitiveness; domestic products are essentially copies of imported ones. Taking transmitters as an example, they represent the core component, and what’s involved here are circuit boards and chips, which are mostly imported. Most domestic products are unstable, and even for pressure and temperature sensors, domestic models require imported transmitters in order to function stably； As for the sensor part, emphasis is placed on calculation and processing accuracy as well as cost-effectiveness for Chinese manufacturers; a fairly basic level of quality is sufficient. Nevertheless, many of these sensors are still usable, such as resistors, thermocouples, balance devices, orifice plates, and Venturi meters for measuring flow rates. After all, they are simply manufactured through molding processes; the main issues lie in calculation and processing accuracy, which is why their precision is lower compared to imported ones. A lot of investment is put into the research and development of imported instruments, and the same is true in China; many universities engage in such research and development, but they lack the necessary funding for it. Personal businesses also reach a certain point at which they can’t go any further; the main challenges lie in the core aspects.
